Anxiety can feel completely overwhelming and scary, grounding techniques can help bring your mind back to the present moment while also helping you focus on God’s presence. Here are some Christian grounding techniques you can try during an anxiety attack:

1. The 5-4-3-2-1 Method with Gratitude
Slowly identify:
- 5 things you can see
- 4 things you can touch
- 3 things you can hear
- 2 things you can smell
- 1 thing you can taste
As I do this, I often thank God for each thing I notice. Nothing is too small to give thanks for!
2. Breathe and Pray
Take slow breaths:
- Inhale for 4 counts: “Jesus, You are with me.”
- Hold for 4 counts
- Exhale for 6 counts: “I give You my fears.”
Repeat several times.
3. Focus on a Bible Verse
Choose a short verse and repeat it slowly. Some good ones from the NLT version that I personally go to:
“When doubts filled my mind, your comfort gave me renewed hope and cheer.” – Psalms:19
“You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in you, all whose thoughts are fixed on you!” – Isaiah:3
4. Name What Is True
Anxiety usually tells us “what if” stories. Counter them with the TRUTH:
- God is with me
- I am safe right now
- This feeling will pass
- God has carried me through difficult moments before
- I don’t have to solve everything today
5. Hold a Physical Reminder of Faith
Hold a cross (this is my go-to as I have a cross necklace), Bible, prayer journal, or another meaningful object. Focus on its texture and remind yourself:
“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted.” (Psalm 34:18, NLT)
6. Pray Using the Name of Jesus
Keep it simple:
“Jesus, help me.”
“Jesus, give me peace.”
“Jesus, I trust You with this moment.”
Short prayers are powerful when your mind feels overwhelmed. I like to use these because I don’t overthink it, it is short and to the point and that is what we may need in an anxious moment.
7. Read a Psalm Out Loud
Reading Scripture aloud can help interrupt anxious thoughts. Good choices include:
- For when you need reassurance: “Even when I walk through the darkest valley, I will not be afraid, for you are close beside me.” – Psalm 23:4
- For when anxiety feels overwhelming: “God is our refuge and strength, always ready to help in times of trouble.” – Psalm 46:1
- For when you need to feel “safe”: “Those who live in the shelter of the most high will find rest in the shadow of the Almighty.” – Psalm 91:1
- For when your mind is filled with worry: “When doubts filled my mind, your comfort gave me renewed hope and cheer.” – Psalm 94:19
8. Ground Yourself Through Worship
When my anxiety starts to spiral, one of the first things I do is turn on a worship song. Focusing on the lyrics helps quiet the noise in my mind and reminds me of God’s promises. Even if I don’t feel like singing, simply listening can help me shift my focus from my fears to the One who is holding me through them.
9. Use Your Senses to Remember God’s Presence
Look around and say:
- “God is with me in this room.”
- “God sees me.”
- “God knows what I’m feeling.”
- “God is holding me even now.”
10. Create a “Peace List”
Keep a note on your phone with:
- Favorite Bible verses
- Prayers
- Things God has helped you through before
- Encouraging reminders
When anxiety strikes, read through the list slowly.
A Simple Prayer for an Anxiety Attack
Heavenly Father, my mind feels overwhelmed right now. Help me focus on Your presence instead of my fear. Remind me that I am safe in Your hands. Fill me with Your peace that surpasses all understanding. Give me strength for this moment and help me trust You one breath at a time. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Many Blessings,
Lisa
