10 Bible Verses for Loneliness

Finding Comfort in God’s Presence

10 Bible Verses for Loneliness featuring an open Bible on a cozy blanket with a coffee mug and dried flowers, symbolizing God's comfort and hope

Loneliness has a way of making everything feel heavier. It can creep in after the loss of a relationship, during a difficult season, when friends seem distant, or even while surrounded by other people. I’ve learned that loneliness isn’t always about being physically alone, sometimes it’s the feeling that no one truly understands what I’m carrying.

The good news is that God does.

One of the things that has helped me most is opening my Bible and reminding myself of what is true instead of believing what loneliness tries to tell me. Scripture continually reminds me that God is near, He sees me, and He promises never to leave me.

If you’re walking through a lonely season today, I pray these 10 Bible verses for loneliness encourage your heart and remind you that you are never alone.

1. Deuteronomy 31:8 (NLT)

“Do not be afraid or discouraged, for the Lord will personally go ahead of you. He will be with you; he will neither fail you nor abandon you.”

Loneliness often whispers that I’ve been forgotten. This verse reminds me that God doesn’t send me into difficult seasons by myself. He goes before me, walks beside me, and stays with me every step of the way.

When I feel abandoned by people, I remember that God never abandons His children.

2. Psalm 34:18 (NLT)

“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted; he rescues those whose spirits are crushed.”

This has become one of my favorite verses during hard seasons.

God doesn’t wait until I’m feeling better before coming near. He draws closest when my heart is hurting the most. Even when I can’t feel His presence, I can trust His promise that He is near.

3. Isaiah 41:10 (NLT)

“Don’t be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be discouraged, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you. I will hold you up with my victorious right hand.”

Loneliness can leave me feeling fragile and exhausted.

God doesn’t simply tell me not to fear. He tells me why. He promises His strength, His help, and His presence. When I don’t have enough strength on my own, He becomes my strength.

4. Matthew 28:20 (NLT)

“…And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”

Jesus didn’t promise His followers an easy life.

He promised His presence.

No matter what season I’m walking through, Jesus is still with me. There isn’t a single day where I must face life alone.

5. Joshua 1:9 (NLT)

“This is my command—be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid or discouraged. For the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”

I absolutely love the words wherever you go.

Whether I’m sitting at home feeling isolated, driving to work, or facing another difficult day, God is already there.

There is nowhere I can go that His presence cannot reach me.

6. Psalm 139:7-10 (NLT)

“I can never escape from your Spirit! I can never get away from your presence!… Even there your hand will guide me, and your strength will support me.”

Sometimes loneliness makes me feel invisible.

But God sees every tear, every prayer, and every silent struggle. His presence reaches every place my heart goes, even the darkest ones.

7. Hebrews 13:5 (NLT)

“For God has said, ‘I will never fail you. I will never abandon you.'”

People sometimes leave.

Friendships change.

Relationships end.

But God’s faithfulness never changes.

His love isn’t dependent on whether someone else chooses to stay.

8. Psalm 68:6 (NLT)

“God places the lonely in families…”

This verse reminds me that God often meets our loneliness through community.

He created us for relationships. Sometimes He brings encouragement through our church family, trusted friends, small groups, or other believers who remind us we aren’t walking alone.

One of the greatest blessings during my own difficult season was reconnecting with Bible study and spending time with my sisters in Christ. God used that community to encourage my heart in ways I didn’t expect.

9. John 14:18 (NLT)

“No, I will not abandon you as orphans—I will come to you.”

Jesus understands what it feels like to comfort people who feel alone.

He reminds us that we belong to Him.

We are never abandoned because we are part of God’s family.

10. Romans 8:38-39 (NLT)

“And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love…”

Loneliness often tries to convince me that I’m isolated from everyone, including God.

But Scripture says the exact opposite.

Nothing—not fear, pain, depression, distance, or difficult circumstances—can separate me from God’s love.

That’s a promise I can hold onto.

When Loneliness Feels Overwhelming

Loneliness can affect both our emotional and spiritual health. Sometimes it lasts longer than we expect, and that’s okay to admit.

I’ve learned that healing doesn’t always happen overnight.

Sometimes God comforts me through His Word.

Sometimes He reminds me to reach out to trusted friends.

Sometimes He meets me during prayer.

Sometimes He uses counseling or therapy as part of the healing process.

God often works through many different avenues to bring hope and healing.

If loneliness has become persistent or is contributing to anxiety or depression, please know there is no shame in asking for help. God can work through pastors, Christian friends, counselors, and mental health professionals.

A Prayer for Loneliness

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for reminding me that I am never truly alone. When loneliness feels overwhelming, help me remember Your promises instead of my feelings. Draw close to me when my heart is hurting. Give me the courage to reach out for support when I need it and surround me with people who encourage my faith. Thank You for never leaving me or abandoning me, even when I cannot see what You’re doing.

Help me rest in Your presence today.

In Jesus’ name,

Amen.

Final Encouragement

If you’re reading this while feeling lonely, I want you to know something:

Your loneliness does not define your worth.

God sees you.

He knows every tear you’ve cried.

He hears every prayer you’ve whispered.

And He has never left your side.

Even when you can’t feel Him, His promises remain true.

Hold tightly to His Word today, because the God who promised to never leave you is still faithfully walking beside you.
