There have been many times in my life when I wanted to pray, but I simply didn’t have the words. My heart felt heavy, my mind was overwhelmed, and every prayer I tried to form seemed to disappear before it ever reached my lips. I thought I needed the perfect words for God to hear me, but over time, I realize gradually that He is never waiting for a perfect prayer. He is simply waiting for me to come to Him.
Sometimes I sit in complete silence because I don’t know where to begin. The sadness feels too deep to explain, the anxiety too overwhelming to untangle, and the questions too complicated to answer. In those moments, I remind myself that God already knows what I’m carrying. He knows every tear I’ve cried, every fear I’ve hidden, and every thought I’ve been unable to put into words.
What to Do When You Don’t Know What to Pray
One of the verses that has become meaningful to me is Romans 8:26:
“And the Holy Spirit helps us in our weakness. For example, we don’t know what God wants us to pray for. But the Holy Spirit prays for us with groanings that cannot be expressed in words.”
That verse gives me so much comfort because it reminds me that I’m not failing when I don’t know what to pray. Even in my silence, God understands. His Holy Spirit is praying on my behalf when I can’t find the words myself. That truth has carried me through some of my darkest days.
I’ve learned that prayer doesn’t always have to sound polished. Sometimes my prayers are simply, “Lord, help me.” Other times they’re just tears running down my face. I’ve discovered that God hears both equally well. He isn’t grading my prayers. He’s looking at my heart.
Turning to Scripture When Words Won’t Come

When I don’t know what to pray, I also turn to Scripture. The Psalms have become a place of safety for me because David wasn’t afraid to pour out every emotion he had before God. He prayed when he was afraid, discouraged, angry, lonely, and grateful. Reading his prayers reminds me that God welcomes honesty. I don’t have to pretend everything is okay when it isn’t.
On especially difficult days, I also revisit 10 Bible Verses for Depression or 10 Bible Verses for Anxiety and Overthinking because filling my mind with God’s Word helps quiet the noise around me.
There have even been days when all I could do was whisper the name of Jesus. Somehow, that one name carried more meaning than an entire paragraph ever could. It reminded me that I wasn’t alone and that the One who calmed storms could also bring peace to the chaos inside my own heart. When my anxious thoughts become overwhelming, I’ve found comfort in Faith and Therapy: Why Both Can Work Together, which reminds me that seeking support and trusting God can go hand in hand. It is okay to seek help.
God Understands My Heart Even in Silence
I’ve also learned that God isn’t distant when I feel spiritually empty. In fact, I think He often draws closest during those moments. Even when I don’t feel His presence, I can trust His promises. My feelings change from day to day, but His faithfulness never does. Whenever I need help finding peace, I often pray through the words in Prayer for Peace of Mind, allowing those simple prayers to guide my own heart back to God.
If you’re in a season where you don’t know what to pray, I want you to know you’re not alone. I’ve been there too. God isn’t asking you to have all the answers or say all the right things. He simply invites you to come to Him exactly as you are. Bring your confusion, your doubts, your fears, and even your silence.

Sometimes the most powerful prayer I can pray is simply, “Jesus, I’m here.”
And somehow, that’s enough.
If all you have today is silence, don’t mistake that for distance from God. He is still listening. He still loves you. He still understands every unspoken burden you carry. Even when I have no words left, I can rest knowing that my Heavenly Father hears the prayers my heart cannot speak. That truth gives me hope every single time I come to Him empty-handed.
Many Blessings,
Lisa Marie
