10 Bible Verses for Depression

Depression can make even the simplest things feel overwhelming. For me, one of the hardest parts of a depressive episode is finding the motivation to open my Bible, pray, or seek God at all. When you’re feeling exhausted, discouraged, or numb, drawing close to Him doesn’t always come naturally.

Yet those are often the moments when we need Him the most.

I’ve learned that sometimes faith means choosing to do the opposite of what my feelings are telling me to do. It isn’t easy, and I don’t always get it right. The good news is that God never expects perfection from us. He meets us right where we are, even on our darkest days.

The Bible verses below are some of the ones I turn to when I’m struggling with depression or feeling weighed down by life’s challenges. They help remind me that I’m not alone, that God is still present, and that there is HOPE even when I can’t see it.

My prayer is that these verses bring you the same comfort and encouragement they have brought me. If there are any Bible verses that have helped you through difficult times, I’d love for you to share them in the comments below.

1. Psalm 34:18

“The LORD is close to the brokenhearted; he rescues those whose spirits are crushed.”

This verse reminds us that God doesn’t leave us when we’re hurting. He draws near to us in our deepest pain.

2. Isaiah 41:10

“Don’t be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be discouraged, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you. I will hold you up with my victorious right hand.”

Depression can make you feel weak and alone, but God promises to give you strength and support when you can’t carry yourself.

3. Matthew 11:28-30

“Then Jesus said, ‘Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.'”

Jesus invites us to bring our emotional exhaustion to Him instead of trying to carry it alone.

4. Psalm 42:11

“Why am I discouraged? Why is my heart so sad? I will put my hope in God! I will praise him again—my Savior and my God!”

This verse acknowledges sadness while encouraging us to hold on to hope even when our feelings tell us otherwise.

5. Lamentations 3:22-23

“The faithful love of the LORD never ends! His mercies never cease. Great is his faithfulness; his mercies begin afresh each morning.”

Every new day is a fresh start with God, no matter how difficult yesterday may have been.

6. Romans 15:13

“I pray that God, the source of hope, will fill you completely with joy and peace because you trust in him. Then you will overflow with confident hope through the power of the Holy Spirit.”

Depression often makes it feel like hope, joy, and peace are out of reach. This verse reminds us that God is the source of hope and that through the Holy Spirit, He can fill our hearts with peace and renewed hope even during our darkest seasons.

7. Psalm 147:3

“He heals the brokenhearted and bandages their wounds.”

God sees emotional wounds just as clearly as the physical ones and promises to bring healing over time.

8. John 16:33

“I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world.”

Depression can make us feel isolated in our struggles, but this verse reminds us that Jesus understands the reality of pain and sorrow. Even in difficult seasons, we can find comfort in knowing that He has overcome the world.

9. 2 Corinthians 4:8-9

“We are pressed on every side by troubles, but we are not crushed. We are perplexed, but not driven to despair. We are hunted down, but never abandoned by God. We get knocked down, but we are not destroyed.”

Depression can make us feel overwhelmed and defeated, but this verse reminds us that our struggles do not have the power to destroy us. Even when we feel knocked down, God has not abandoned us, and with His help we can continue moving forward one step at a time.

10. Joshua 1:9

“This is my command—be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid or discouraged. For the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.”

God’s presence goes with you into every difficult moment, giving you courage to take the next step forward. It reminds us that God is always with us.

Here is a gentle reminder: Depression often tells us that we are alone, forgotten, or without hope. These verses consistently point to the opposite, they point to the TRUTH: God is near, God cares, God strengthens, and God is not finished with your story. He is not done with us.

Many Blessings,

Lisa
